The BSM Bursary Fund aims to help transform the lives of students with the opportunity of a world-class education.
This continues the school's 50-year tradition of philanthropy and charitable involvement by granting financial support to talented students who otherwise would not be able to afford the fees.
In addition to the established Scholarship programme, the Bursary Fund will offer needs-based places at the BSM, funded in part by the school and in part by generous donations from parents.
The fund will be administered transparently by the Development Office.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the BSM Bursary Fund?
The School is committed to broadening access to a BSM education by offering to eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support. Such support may be awarded in the form of a discount on tuition fees payable, depending on the financial, compassionate, or other pertinent circumstances of applicants.
Who is eligible to apply?
The bursary applications are open to students who are not currently enrolled at BSM and meet the criteria at the time of the assessment period.
What are the eligibility criteria?
On top of a good academic record, the applicant must demonstrate the following:
* Good English level
* Overall family income must meet the needs-based criteria (i.e. based on the Italian Government guidelines)
* Positive attitude to learning
How will the assessment be carried out?
As the core of the assessment process will be "needs-based", the BSM Bursary fund committee will focus on the family's financial circumstances i.e. disposable income, size of the family, and other relevant factors. In addition to that, a customized admission process will be put in place to ensure the success of the applicant in getting admitted into the school.
What are the steps to the process?
1. Parents/guardians of bursary applicants will be required to complete an online application form
2. The Bursary fund committee, composed of the Principal, CFO, Development Director, and Admissions, will assess all applications to establish eligibility- both academically and socially. Also part of the team will be a designated Social Worker who will work closely with the applicant and their family to
a. Verify the accuracy of the information provided
b. Help them through the application and ultimately the transition process when an over is made and is accepted
c. Be the family's point person throughout the child's academic year
3. The Bursary Fund Committee considers the applications and a decision will be communicated to the family
4. Parents/guardians will be required to sign an Acceptance Form accepting the bursary and its terms and conditions.
What other factors are considered when assessing a bursary applicant?
The amount of the needs-based bursary is influenced by the extent of need. Each case is assessed on its own merits and awards are made accordingly. It is recognised that judgments about what sacrifices a family should make to pay school fees will be personal. However, the School has to ensure that all bursaries are fair and so, as well as current earnings, other factors that will be considered in determining the necessary level of bursary will include:
- The ability to improve the financial position or earning power of the family
- Opportunities to release any capital
- Contribution to household costs by other, wider, family members, and adults related or unrelated to the child, or by outside sources
- Fees paid to other schools or universities
- The social needs of the child
- The parents/guardians health and ability to secure permanent employment
The School considers that inter alia the following would not be consistent with the receipt of an award:
- Frequent or expensive holidays
- New or luxury cars
- Investment in significant home improvements
- A second property/land holding
Is there a review process throughout the academic year?
All bursaries are subject to regular review. The continuation of bursaries is dependent upon good school reports for effort and achievement, attendance, and punctuality. The Bursary Fund Committee has the discretion to reduce and/or withdraw an award not only where a pupil’s progress, attitude, behaviour, attendance, and punctuality are deemed to have been unsatisfactory, but also where the parents/guardians have failed to support the School; for example, failure to adhere to the Parental Code of Conduct, or falsifying needs-based information submitted at the time of the assessment.
Is the process confidential?
The Bursary Fund Committee respects the confidentiality of means-tested awards made to families and recipients are expected to do likewise.
